Hello Gwinnett,

I hope you all had a great month. March was an extremely action-packed month. You had NCAA March Madness, DeAngelo Hall going to play for Al Davis and his Raiders, the Hawks playoff push, the Rockets 22 game winning streak, and I have an exclusive interview with former NBA basketball player, Charlie Scott.
I want to start off by talking about the red- hot Houston Rockets who have made history and made the people in H-Town happy! Even though Yao Ming is out for the rest of the season, The Rockets somehow came up with 22 straight wins (which started on January 29th and ended on March 17th). They met their match when it came down to playing the Boston Celtics. I can understand the Celtics winning the game. But winning by such a large margin and playing at Houston… now that’s tough! I’m 100% sure that Boston will play well. As for Houston. With 4.5 games separating the 1st and 8th seeds in the west, The Rockets need to win every single game the rest of the way it seems. It looks like the rest of this season will be great!
Here we are, and the Atlanta Hawks are under 500. Again! But unlike previous seasons, this season, there is a twist. The Hawks are actually in 8th place in the Eastern Conference playoffs standings. But they are fighting off the New Jersey Nets and the Chicago Bulls for the last playoff spot. There is only one game separating Atlanta and New Jersey and there are only two games separating the Hawks and the Bulls. All three teams have 15 games left and every game counts. Hopefully Atlanta can come up with some good wins and maybe keep the final playoff spot.
Things aren’t going that well for the Atlanta Falcons. They released Algae Crumpler and Warrick Dunn. Now the Falcons are trying to send Pro Bowl Cornerback DeAngelo Hall to the Oakland Raiders for a second round pick in this year’s draft. Maybe the Falcons can trade that second round pick away and get some protection for Joey Harrington. Hopefully things can turn things around. But I don’t like what this team is doing. Maybe it’s for the better, but I don’t see it.
The Georgia Bulldogs are a great team…. well, at least their football team. But their basketball team is starting to show that they are not just a football school. Coming into the SEC tournament, the Dawgs were 4-12 in conference play. But from the 13th through the 16th of March, the men in black & red won 4 games. They played three games in two days, and won ‘em all! A major tornado hit the Georgia Dome (where they held the SEC tourney) and the CNN Center. That tornado put holes in our beloved Dome and sent the colleges to play at Georgia Tech. Georgia upset the Kentucky Wildcats (and almost ended the Wildcats NCAA tournament bid) and won in dramatic fashion. They went on to beat Mississippi State & Arkansas. After that, there was no question about Dennis Felton’s Job. This is a great story! Although Georgia lost in the first round to Xavier, they finished the season as SEC champs. Congratulations!
Finally, I interviewed former ABA and NBA great, Charlie Scott and his sons, Shannon and Shaun who play for the Lovett School. Charlie, his wife, Trudy and their children reside in Gwinnett County. Here are some quick facts about Charlie Scott and his sons: Charlie Scott was born in New York City, New York. He was the first African American to get a scholarship at UNC (University of North Carolina). He was a three-time All Star when he played with the Suns. He was a gold Medalist at the 1968 Olympics. He set the ABA record for highest scoring average in one season (34.6 points per game). His son Shaun (who is a 6’3 forward, #33 at the Lovett School) has the ability to shoot the three and to take it to the hoop. His other son Shannon is 6’1 guard, #21 at the Lovett School. From what I saw in a game on February 16, Shaun is a great passer and is also able to hit the three.
