The year was 1974; you remember, don't you? Nixon and Watergate; Hank Aaron hits 715 to break Babe Ruth's homerun record; Stephen King publishes Carrie; Lucy, the mother of all archaeological discoveries is found; Muhammad Ali and George Foreman "Rumble in the Jungl"; the average cost of a new home is $35,000 and gas is a whopping 55 cents per gallon. Juicy Fruit Gum made history being the first product actually scanned with a UPC and secretaries were beginning to use word processors. We were entertained with movies such as The Sting, The Exorcist and Blazing Saddles; we rushed home to watch the Six Million Dollar Man. Among the music we loved was Olivia Newton-John's I Honestly Love You, and The Atlanta Rhythm Section's 3rd Album. In Snellville, everybody was still somebody, and they wanted a nice park, so we celebrated the first ever Snellville Days, an event to raise money for Briscoe Park.
After 35 years, Snellville Days is still celebrated and this year, we're bringing in The Atlanta Rhythm Section to make it a completely special weekend!
Join us on Saturday, May 3rd as we kick off the weekend at 10:00 a.m. with our annual parade showcasing all that is special and wonderful about Snellville. Marching bands and majorettes, beauty queens in convertibles and clowns making balloon animals; a hometown parade at its very best! Then enjoy the festival at Briscoe Park from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. for amazing crafts, entertainment throughout the park, lots of activities for the kids and, of course, the food that makes all festivals so special!
You'll hear the music start at 6:00; make your way over to the main stage for an evening of retro-type fun as we entertain you with disco and dancing until 8:00 when The Atlanta Rhythm Section takes the stage! They'll perform Champagne Jam, So Into You, Imaginary Lover; and all their hits from the 70's and 80's. It'll be an evening of remembering for those of us who experienced this band the first time, and a time to introduce the younger set to some of the classics!
On Sunday morning, the festival reopens for another full day of entertainment and crafts throughout the park from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Enjoy free entry to the park and the entertainment on both days; after 35 years, we just want to share the weekend with you!
