THE IRIS
In the springtime Irises are seen in yards all over Gwinnett County. The name Fleur-de-lis is sometimes used for the Iris; that is French for flower of the lily. The name Iris comes from the Greek word for rainbow and in Greek mythology Iris was the golden-winged goddess of the rainbow and a messenger of the gods. Iris especially carried messages from Juno. She carried his commands to men traveling on the path of the rainbow. Iris married Zephyrus, the west wind.
